Guatemala Fishing at Sailfish Bay Lodge

Jan 2 - Mike Morris & Andy Laursen arrived at Sailfish Bay and their target - sailfish on fly rods. Fishing on Sirena they raised 11 sailfish and released 6 on fly.

Jan 3 - Mike & Andy raised 9 sailfish and released 4 on fly aboard Sirena.

Jan 4 - Mike & Andy released 3 sailfish on fly aboard Sirena. So far they are doing excellent with 13 sailfish releases on fly in 3 days.

Jan 5 - Mike & Andy raised 18 sailfish and released another 5 on fly!

Jan 6 - Mike & Andy raised 25 sailfish and released 4 more on fly.

Jan 7 - Lee and Lynn Dudinsky arrived at Sailfish Bay. Fishing aboard Maverick they raised 12 sailfish and released 10 conventional.

Jan 8 - Lee and Lynn raised 22 sailfish and released 15 conventional.

Jan 11 - Denis, Captain Pia, and Captain Benjy headed out for a few hours. Denis released his first 2 sailfish on fly and released 3 dorado conventional.

Jan 13 - The Love Group returned to Sailfish Bay for the 3rd time in 13 months. The group included Frank Love, Tom Love, Bradley Jenkins, Michael Brakefield, Anthony Andrukaitis, Dennis Smith, David Garin, Sanjay Mani, Robert Barnes, Michael Mears, Steven Magness, and Jon Fjeld-Hansen (our first Norweigan client).

Fishing aboard Sirena, Maverick, Mariner, Ballena, Spindrift, and Macara the group raised over 60 sailfish and released 38 sailfish combining fly fishing and conventional. They also released one 300 lb. Blue marlin.

Jan 14 - The Love Group raised 43 sailfish and released 13 combining fly fishing and conventional. They also raised 3 Blue marlin that did not take the baits and released 5 dorado.

Jan 15 - The Love Group raised 75 sailfish and released 25 sailfish mainly fly fishing although a few were caught conventional.

They also raised 2 Blue Marlin, released one 250-300 pounder,and nailed three 30 lb dorado.

Jan 16 - The Skip Kost group arrived at Sailfish Bay after 7 straight years heading to Costa Rica. After the first day they mentioned they have found a new home. The group included Skip, Bob Hansen, Jim Steponavich, Jerry Bowman, Mike Flanagan, and Kelly Christopher.

Fishing aboard Maverick they raised 17 sailfish and released 13 conventional and 1 large dorado.

Fishing aboard Mariner they raised 18 sailfish, released 1 on fly and 2 conventional.

Jan 17 - The Kost group raised 11 sailfish on Maverick and released 7 today. 3 on fly and 4 on light spinning gear.

They also raised 11 sailfish on Mariner and released 3 on fly. In addition to the sailfish they slammed 20 yellowfin tuna both on fly and spinning gear. And to top the day off two 30 lb dorado - one on fly.

The Brett Combs group arrived at Sailfish Bay. Like the Kost group, they fished Costa Rica last year and zeroed in on Sailfish Bay and Guatemala for 2008. The group included Brett, Ronnie Gilmore, Lee Holcomb, Raymond Gibson, John Marsh, Robbie Fish, David Bigelow, and James Baker.

Fishing aboard Stratgos they raised 17 sailfish and released 11 conventional.

Fishing aboard Ballena they raised 8 sailfish and released 5 conventional.

Jan 18 - The Kost group raised 20 sailfish on Maverick. They released 3 on fly and 1 conventional. They raised 2 Blue marlin and released one! And finally a dorado.

Also fishing on Mariner The Kost group raised 20 sailfish and released 2 on fly rods. They released a 280 lb Blue marlin and some small dorado.

The Combs group slammed the sails as well. Fishing on Sirena they raised 23 and released 16 conventional. They raised 2 Blue marlin but could not get them to take the baits.

Fishing also on Ballena, The Combs group raised 12 sailfish and released 7 conventional. The guys on board released a Blue marlin and released a dorado!

Fishing also on Stratgos, The Combs group raised 14 sailfish and released 11 conventional.

Two more defectors from Costa Rica arrived at Sailfish Bay this week - Robert and Edward Finley fishing aboard Che Cito raised 9 sailfish and released 6 conventional.

Jan 19 - The Kost group released one Blue marlin on Maverick and several dorado.

They also raised 18 sailfish and released 5 on fly aboard Mariner.

The Combs group raised 15 sailfish and released 5 conventional. They also raised a big marlin, but could not get it to take the baits.

The Combs group raised 13 sailfish and released 10 conventional on Stratgos.

On their 3rd boat The Combs party raised 18 sailfish and released 14 conventional on Ballena.

The Finley group raised 10 sailfish on Che Cito and released 7 conventional.

Jan 20 - The Finley group raised 11 sailfish and released 7 conventional on Che Cito. In addition, they nailed 3 marlin! Two striped marlin around 90 and 120 lbs. The other was a Big Ass Blue and we don't know how much it weighed. We just know it was damn big!

David, Bill, and Jonathon Meaney arrived at Sailfish Bay with Michael Marchand. Fishing aboard Maverick the group raised 26 sailfish and released 15 conventional.

Also arriving for his second visit to Sailfish Bay was was Corey Knowlton. Joining Corey, his wife Amber, Richard Bell-Cross, Nicholas Mundt, and Hentie Van Heerden. Fishing aboard Mariner they raised 9 sailfish and released 8 conventional. They also raised a 350 lb Blue marlin that did not take the baits.

Fly fishers Andy Maddoff and Jonathan Fisher arrived on the coast. Aboard Sirena they raised 20 sailfish and released 4 on fly rods.

Jan 21 - The Meaney group raised 56 sailfish and released 28 conventional aboard Maverick!

The Maddoff group raised 46 sailfish and released 9 on fly rods! They also raised one Blue marlin that did not take.

The Knowlton group raised 24 sailfish, released 8 conventional and 1 on fly.

Jan 22 - The Maddoff group raised 30 sailfish and released 5 on fly aboard Sirena.

Jan 24 - The Porter group returned for their second visit to Sailfish Bay. The group included Bob Porter, Andy Fremento, Phil Fremento, Chris West, Greg Edmonds, Steve Broom, Rod Brock, Pete Apol, John Allen, Jim Robinson, Tony Luccarelli, Mike Saylor, Tom Champion, Bryan Paul, Chris West, Jack Allen and John J. Allen III.

Fishing aboard Maverick, Sirena, Allure, Che Cito, Spindrift, Mariner and Perla Del Mar the group raised 60 sailfish and released 32 conventional.

Jan 25 - The Porter group raised 47 sailfish and released 23 sailfish conventional among their group.

They also released 1 Blue marlin, 5 Dorado and 29 Red Snapper.

Jan 26 - The Porter group raised 42 sailfish and released 23 conventional among their group.

They also raised 3 Blue marlin and released 1.

Jan 27 - Dr. Ramirez returned to Sailfish Bay again this year bringing with him Dr. Ramirez (his son), Rafael Perez, Rafael Perez (son), Jose Grau, and Luis Rodriguez.

Fishing aboard Sirena they raised 17 sailfish and released 11 conventional.

Fishing aboard Mariner they raised 14 sailfish and released 6 conventional.

Jan 28 - The Ramirez group raised 8 sailfish and released 4 conventional.

The Ramirez group aboard Mariner raised 7 sailfish and released 4 conventional.

Also, arriving at Sailfish Bay were Bob & Molly Boone. Fishing aboard Maverick they raised 4 sailfish and released 3 conventional.

Jan 29 - The Boone group raised 5 sailfish and released 0 on Maverick.

The Ramirez group raised 4 sailfish on Sirena and released 3 conventional.

The group also fishing on Mariner raised 3 sailfish and released 1 conventional.

Jan 30 - The Boone group raised 8 sailfish and released 3 conventional on Maverick.

The Ramirez group raised 5 sailfish and released 3 conventional on Sirena.

The Ramirez group also raised 22 sailfish and released 9 conventional on Mariner.

The Courson party returned to Sailfish Bay for the 3rd time. Unfortunately, Kirk had a last minute dealing and could not make it. Krista Courson, Matthew Sim and Perry Sooter raised 4 sailfish and released 2 conventional on Macara.

Jan 31 - The Courson group raised 8 sailfish and released 5 conventional aboard Macara. They also released 1 Blue marlin.

The Poole Family arrived at Sailfish Bay and included David, Bynum, Reid, Weeks, and Jonathan Wilfong. Fishing aboard Maverick they raised 12 sailfish and released 4 conventional. They also released 1 Blue marlin and 1 dorado.
