March 2012 - Guatemala Fishing Report

March 30 - 31
We welcomed well-regarded Outdoor Writer Gary Kramer and Kan Mayer to Guatemala. Fishing on Gypsy they raised 10 sailfish, had 6 bites and released 2 conventional and raised 6 sailfish, had 4 bites and released 0 on fly. They also raised 1 Blue marlin.

John Saunders returned to fish with us again with 3 lifelong buddies. Fishing on Blue Desert they raised 22 sailfish, had 13 bites and released 11 conventional.

The group from Universal Leaf also returned hosting some of their European clients. Fishing on Fortuna they raised 6 sailfish, had 4 bites and released 2 conventional. They also caught 1 40 lb. dorado.

March 24 - 28
Jim White returned for the 2nd time in 3 months. Joining Jim was Cole Williams. In 4 days fishing on Gypsy they have raised 33 sailfish, had 24 bites and released 10 on light tackle. They also caught 1 Striped marlin. That is the 4th Striped marlin in the last 10 days.

Walter and Bruno Orensztajn and Luis Kaner arrived from Brazil. Fishing on Fortuna for 3 days they raised 17 sailfish, had 14 bites and released 10 conventional. They also caught 1 40 lb dorado.

The John Saunders group fished on Blue Desert for 3 days. They raised 44 sailfish, had 36 bites and released 21 conventional.

We welcomed a group of avid anglers from Columbia who have fished all over the world. Fishing on Maverick for 2 days they raised 12 sailfish, had 10 bites and released 5 conventional.

The Universal Leaf group arrived for a day's fishing. Fishing on Fortuna they raised 7 sailfish, had 7 bites and released 5 conventional.

March 18 - 23
Fishing slowed down a bit. The Miller family returned for the 2nd time in 6 months. Byrd, Byrd IV, Eliza and Catherine. 3rd visit with us total. In 3 days fishing on Gypsy they raised 23 sailfish, had 17 bites and released 10 conventional.

Bob and Grant Wilbur arrived for 4 days fishing. On Maverick they raised 25 sailfish, had 24 bites and released 18 conventional. They also caught several yellowfin tuna.

Judson Sommerville and Benigno Saenz arrived for 3 days fishing. On Fortuna they raised 14 sailfish, had 10 bites and released 5 conventional. They also caught 1 40 lb dorado and fought a 300 lb Blue marlin until it straightened out the hook and was lost on 20 lb test.

Dr Robert Glass, Weston and Grant Gordon, Dr Bill and Adam Mason arrived for 2 days fishing. On Fortuna they raised 9 sailfish, had 7 bites and released 4 conventional.

Joyce, Michael, and Aaron Burcombe were joined by Greg Walton, and James Allen for 1 day of fishing. On Gypsy they raised 10 sailfish, had 8 bites and released 7 conventional

March 12 - 17
Dan Erb returned for the 4th time and joining him was Greg McBrayer. In 3 days fishing on Fortuna they raised 83 sailfish, had 73 bites and released 40 conventional.

Steve and Danny Davidson arrived for the hot sailfish action. In 4 days bluewater fishing on Maverick they raised 116 sailfish, had 102 bites and released 68 conventional. They also caught 1 Striped Marlin and the last day focused inshore and released 1 Roosterfish. Steve mentions this is the "best bluewater fishing trip I've ever been on....and I've been on plenty."

Greg and Dmitri Wagner arrived on their 2nd trip in just 3 mos (having fished with us in December). Joining them as well is Patrick Trainor. In a friendly battle of Father/Son teams with The Davidsons and all bets being in before fishing they raised in 3 days 79 sailfish, had 66 bites and released 41 conventional.

Photographer Andrew Geiger, along with Benjamin McConohay and Theresa Crowley arrived for the Ex Officio photo shoot at Pacific Fins. Fishing on Gypsy they raised 46 sailfish and had 40 bites while shooting the first day. The 2nd day they raised 16 sailfish, had 10 bites conventional, 4 on fly releasing 10 conventional and 1 on fly.

Tim, Stu, and Stu Miller Jr arrived for 3 days of fishing. Fishing on Gypsy they raised 38 sailfish, had 31 bites and released 11 conventional. They also raised 2 Striped Marlin and released 1.

March 9 - 11
John and Mike McMahan arrived to fish with us. Fishing on Maverick they raised 62 sailfish, had 47 bites and released 35 in 3 days fishing. They also caught 5 dorado and several yellowfin tuna.

Luis Aquirre fished on Fortuna. He raised 15 sailfish, had 15 bites and released 12 in 1/2 a day. He also caught 1 40 lb dorado.

The Michael Skinner group fished 1 day on Gypsy. They raised 44 sailfish, had 40 bites and released 21.

March 1 - 7
Magic Schwartz and Yvonne Melcher arrived for 3 days of fly fishing. Fishing on Fortuna they raised 45 sailfish, had 27 bites and released 9 on fly. Magic has fished all over the world and he was able to catch his first sailfish on fly in Guatemala.

Dr. Howard Kisner and Robert Davidge arrived. In 2 days, fishing on Gypsy they raised 46 sailfish and released 22 on light tackle.

The Allen Langford group finished up their trip with one day in March. On Gypsy they raised 20 sailfish, had 20 bites and released 10. They also raised 2 Blue marlin and released 1.

We also fished Maverick and Gypsy in the Local Tournament over this time. Fishing was outstanding. In 2 days Gypsy raised 81 sailfish, had 69 bites and released 41. On Day 1 Gypsy finished 1st Place in The Rookie Category - Angler. On Day #2 Gypsy finished in 2nd Place in The Expert Category - Angler.

In 2 days Maverick raised 55 sailfish, had 40 bites and released 29.

A total of 12 boats released 391 sailfish in the 2-day Tournament.
