Dec 2013 - Guatemala Fishing Report


Dec 21 - 31

Fishing slowed down right before Christmas then bounced back at the end of the month.

Jim, Cynthia and James Bishop arrived for 3 days fishing. Dec 30 & 31 on Gypsy they raised 61 sailfish, had 56 bites and released 41. They also caught 9 dorado.

The Kara Marcantel Family arrived for 2 days fishing on Maverick. They raised 20 sailfish, had 18 bites and released 14. They also caught 6 yellow fin tuna and raised 1 marlin.

Father/Son Team Eric & Brett Knellinger arrived for 4 days fishing on Sirena. They raised 37 sailfish, had 30 bites and released 20. They also caught 11 dorado and 6 yellowfin tuna.

Father/Son Team Kris & Kashmir Mohandie arrived for 3 days fishing. Dec 30 & 31 on Canaso II they raised 23 sailfish, had 21 bites and released 8. 2 of those sailfish were caught on 12 lb test. They also caught 2 dorado and 5 yellowfin tuna.

Dr. Ramirez visits us 1 - 2 times per year from Puerto Rico. Joining him Edgar Stokes and grandson Hector Reyes. Fishing on Gypsy for 3 days they raised 21 sailfish, had 19 bites and released 13. They also caught 1 Striped marlin.

Greg Frimel returned for his 2nd trip. Joining Greg was his brother Gary. Fishing 5 days on Maverick they raised 22 sailfish, had 19 bites and released 12 (with one double release). They also caught 6 yellowfin tuna.

Semir, Maria, Emilie, and Adrien Belage arrived for a family trip over Christmas. Fishing 6 days on Canaso II they raised 32 sailfish, had 25 bites and released 23. They also caught 1 Blue marlin and 10+ dorado.

Dec 12 - 17
Johnny & Stacey Powers visit us 2 to 3 times per year. They are slamming them on Gypsy. In 3 days fishing - 123 raises, 107 bites and 81 released. They also raised, hooked and missed a Striped marlin.

We welcomed back world-renowned photographer Andrew Geiger to Pacific Fins again this year. Last time he visited we shot the saltwater portion of ExOfficio's catalog with him. Joining Andrew this time for another project were Dan Cook and Jollene Butler. Fishing 3 days on Maverick they raised 50 sailfish, had 40 bites, released 15 conventional and 7 on fly while filming video.

Jack & Cole Houghton and Carlos Lavistida arrived for 3 days fishing on Sirena. They raised 128 sailfish, had 110 bites, and released 79!

Dec 7 - 10

The Gearou group also returned for their 2nd trip this year! Robert and Thomas Gearou, Daniel, Tim, Charles and Randy Hales, Mark Gehl, David Schmolke, and Andy McConnell. Fishing on Gypsy, Maverick & Canaso II they raised 89 sailfish had 71 bites, and released 59. They also raised 3 Blue marlin and released 1.

One of our local clients booked 1 day of fishing on Maverick Dec 6. They raised 18 sailfish, had 17 bites, and released 16.

George Hnat returned for his 2nd trip this year. On this visit he was entertaining some of his key clients at Pacific Fins. Joining George were Andrew McCoy, Richard Watkins and Ed Scott. Fishing 3 days on Sirena they raised 45 sailfish, had 33 bites, and released 23. They also raised one Blue marlin. But the big news was Richard Watkins who released one of the biggest sailfish we have ever seen in Guatemala. Our mates, who see thousands of sailfish released each year estimated its weight to be 185 - 195 lbs!!

Dec 2 - 6

Craig Pfent, Jeff Pfent, Lester Pfent, Donald Kujat, Zig Saraniecki, Kevin Chopp and Jack Weeks arrived for 3 days fishing on Maverick & Canaso II. They raised 116 sailfish, had 111 bites and released 87 conventional. They also raised 28 sailfish, had 15 bites and released 3 on fly.

"Noonie" Gilbeau arrived for his 2nd trip with us. Joining Noonie was his wife, Lorraine. Fishing on Gypsy for 4 days they raised 170 sailfish, had 142 bites and released 110! They also caught 1 300 Lb. Blue marlin and 3 dorado!

Jeanne & Jim Mott, Judy & Dan Freeman, Betty & Donald Spice, and Peggy & Donald Maples joined us for a day's fishing. Fishing on Sirena and Knotwork they raised 72 sailfish, had 63 bites and released 46!
